What is side stream filtration?
With regular filtration in a closed loop, every millilitre of water passes through some form of filter, again and again as it flows around. While that’s a thorough way of doing it, it can be overkill, because it necessarily slows down the flow – especially as the filter gets clogged over time.
Side stream filtration uses a branch off the main flow, where the filtration happens. Most of the flow carries on, but a small amount passes through the filtration, then returns to the main flow straight away. Because it’s a continuous loop, any small fragments of contaminant will be caught sooner or later.
What are the benefits of side stream filtration?
Side stream filtration has two main benefits. First, the flow of the water around the system is largely unaffected. There’s nothing hindering the flow, except perhaps a small amount of turbulence around the junction. That’s great where strong, continuous or fast flow is needed. Second, the filter can be cleaned, serviced or upgraded without having to stop the main flow, which is ideal when 24/7 flow is required.
